Return of forest structure and diversity in tropical restoration plantings

چکیده

Stepping-stone restoration plantings can reconcile conservation goals and local land-use needs in highly fragmented ecosystems. We explored how initial planting composition influences recruiting plant species density, diversity, abundance, forest structure a 13-year-old experiment Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico. Treatments included eight fenced with animal-dispersed species, wind-dispersed unplanted plots to favor natural succession, the primary as reference sites. predicted that by attracting more seed dispersers, would most closely resemble forest. A census of trees taller than 2 m showed while had recruits, resembled pioneer density abundance biotically dispersed abiotically plants, individual tree basal area (in square meters per hectare), vertical structure. The approximated non-pioneer community composition. However, treatments were similar each other did not differ diversity. Animal-dispersed matched total plot area. Higher wind-plantings is explained lower establishment limitations, legacy effects, rapid reproduction few planted species. As continues, we expect treatment effects on dispersers will strongly influence community, leading diversity

Tropical forest recovery and restoration

R a week goes by without a news report sounding the alarm of the continued destruction of tropical forests and the concomitant loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services, such as water retention, erosion control and carbon storage. Much of tropical deforestation, particularly in Latin America, is a result of land clearing for pasture and other agricultural uses1. Increasingly, these lands are ...

Restoration of degraded tropical forest landscapes.

The current scale of deforestation in tropical regions and the large areas of degraded lands now present underscore the urgent need for interventions to restore biodiversity, ecological functioning, and the supply of goods and ecological services previously used by poor rural communities. Traditional timber plantations have supplied some goods but have made only minor contributions to fulfillin...

Roles of Birds and Bats in Early Tropical-Forest Restoration

Restoration of tropical forest depended in large part on seed dispersal by fruit-eating animals that transported seeds into planted forest patches. We tested effectiveness of dispersal agents as revealed by established recruits of tree and shrub species that bore seeds dispersed by birds, bats, or both. We documented restoration of dispersal processes over the first 76 months of experimental re...

5 Microbial Diversity and Tropical Forest Functioning

Fungi and bacteria control many of the vital processes on which the very maintenance and survival of tropical forests depend (Hawksworth and Colwell 1992). An overview of the role of microorganisms in ecosystem functioning as a whole has already been presented (Allsopp et al. 1995), Here, our goal is to identify the functional attributes of microorganisms in tropical forests, and to identify th...

Reduced aboveground tree growth associated with higher arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal diversity in tropical forest restoration

Establishing diverse mycorrhizal fungal communities is considered important for forest recovery, yet mycorrhizae may have complex effects on tree growth depending on the composition of fungal species present. In an effort to understand the role of mycorrhizal fungi community in forest restoration in southern Costa Rica, we sampled the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) community across eight s...
